Allen School of Dance

@ Yeovil Dancentre

As a school we offer various different medal tests & competitions for pupils to do.

We offer medal tests in all dance styles, three times a year with the IDTA and UKA dance associations.  These tests are taken at least once each year.

The competitions that we do in the school are as follows –

Superdance
This is probably our most important and most popular event. The Supadance competitions are a great opportunity to enjoy the support and camaraderie that comes with being part of a team. Competitions are run in a league format with each school entering teams to compete in their local league, before meeting teams from schools nationwide in finals held at the end of the season. Each team consists of four couples, who take it in turns to each dance against a couple/couples from another dance school/schools. The leagues are divided into separate areas (North and South) and also into 2 divisions. This creates more even competitions with the less experienced dancers not having to compete against more experienced, and also gives teams a goal to aim towards i.e. promotion from the 2nd to the 1st division.
The shared responsibility that comes with being part of a team, along with the support of your team-mates, makes this an ideal competition for everyone to take part in.  The atmosphere at these competitions is often electric and  at the final where everyone is crowded around cheering their teams on, it resembles Cup Final day.
There are normally 5 events during the year and a National Final which is held in the south for 2 years then the north for 2 years.

IDTA Nationwide Ballroom/Latin
These competitions are held at the world famous Blackpool winter gardens (a floor danced on by all the world champions) and are held in April every year. The competitions are solo events where you are partnered by someone (not necessarily your full time partner) but judged solo. The competitions are not graded but split into age groups.

UKA Nationwide Ballroom/Latin & Freestyle
Again these competitions are held at the world famous Blackpool Winter Gardens and held in June every year. As the IDTA event, these are solo competitions but the advantage is they are graded as well as split into age groups.

IDTA Freestyle
These competitions are held in Blackpool in November and are in Solos, Pairs Rock 'n' Roll and Teams.

IDTA Street Dance
These competitions are held in Blackpool in March and are in Solos, Pairs and Teams.

Festival 2000
This is a Freestyle & Street competition held in June at the large impressive Spectrum Leisure centre in Guildford.  Events here include Solos, Pairs Rock 'n' Roll, Street and Teams.

Len Goodman's Camber Sands
This event is run by Len Goodman from Strictly Come Dancing at the Pontins Holiday village in Sussex.  It is a weekend event where you get to compete in 8 events (with a partner) as well as some fun events on the Saturday night and meet Len who will quite happily pose for a photo or sign one of his books for you.

Most people do only a few of these competitions but some do all of them and they are available for everyone within our Dance Centre.
